Because the one thing that was always missing from the Smurfs saga was tragic civil war. Although, technically, I believe the subject was thoroughly covered in the 1976 feature La Flute a Six Schtroumpfs.
Now, throw in gremlins, tribbles and the tiki doll from Trilogy of Terror to lead an insurrection, and we've got a whole new ball game.
